From flames to floods: Nagpur’s firefighters responded to 1,512 emergency calls in 2023-24

Nagpur: In the vibrant Second Capital of Maharashtra, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s Fire and Emergency Services Department has stood as an unwavering guardian, steadfastly responding to emergencies and ensuring the safety of residents.

The previous financial year, 2023-24, was marked by a dynamic landscape of challenges and achievements for the department. Through their relentless dedication, the Fire Department responded to 1,512 fire and emergency calls, illustrating their commitment to public safety. This report encapsulates the department’s activities, challenges faced, and achievements made during this period.

The Fire Department responded to a total of 699 fire incidents over the year, categorized into 149 major, 144 medium intensity, and 406 minor ones. These incidents led to property damage amounting to Rs 21.83 crore. However, the department’s swift actions managed to save properties valued at Rs 80.17 crore, mitigating substantial losses for the community.

Responding to 813 emergency calls, the Fire Department exhibited remarkable agility in addressing a myriad of crises. Tragically, these emergencies resulted in the loss of 72 lives and injuries to 251 individuals. Notably, climate-related emergencies witnessed an uptick, with incidents like water-logging and tree uprooting contributing to the surge in emergency calls.

In September 2023, Nagpur faced a flash flood due to the overflow of Ambazari dam, prompting the Fire Department to spring into action. Responding to 166 emergency calls, including those related to incessant rains, the department showcased resilience and dedication amidst adversity.

The department, comprising 206 personnel, including 144 permanent and 62 contractual staff, demonstrated unwavering dedication across nine fire stations. Their commitment extended beyond city limits, encompassing the Nagpur region. Moreover, the Fire Department’s scope of work expanded to include animal and bird rescue, responding to 179 animal and 28 bird-related trapped calls.

The Nagpur Municipal Corporation Fire and Emergency Services Department’s performance in 2023-24 reflects a commendable commitment to public safety and service. Despite facing diverse challenges, the department’s proactive approach, coupled with dedicated personnel and efficient operations, has significantly contributed to safeguarding residents and minimizing loss during emergencies.
