Nagpur: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, stated today in Nagpur that Ramdas Athawale has significantly contributed to justice for the Dalit and oppressed communities, transforming the Dalit movement into a movement for economic development. He was speaking at the distribution ceremony of the Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Memorial Award, organized by the Marwari Foundation. The award was presented to Union Minister of State for Social Justice, Ramdas Athawale, by Gadkari at the Banyan Hall of Chitnavis Centre in Civil Lines, Nagpur. The event was presided over by Girish Gandhi, President of the Marwari Foundation. The award consists of ₹5 lakh, a shawl, a coconut, and a memento.

Gadkari highlighted that Athawale had been consistently advocating for projects such as Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’s memorial in London and the one under construction at Mumbai’s Indu Mill site. He praised Athawale’s significant contributions in both social and political spheres. Gadkari also emphasized Girish Gandhi’s efforts in encouraging individuals from various fields, including social, political, and literary sectors.

In his acceptance speech, Ramdas Athawale recalled his journey from the Dalit Panther movement, which stood against injustice, to his current role. He stressed the need for “Practical Ambedkarism” in society and reflected on Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’s crucial role in the Constituent Assembly. Athawale also mentioned Ambedkar’s efforts in establishing the People’s Education Society to promote education, noting that around 100,000 students are currently pursuing studies in various disciplines through its institutions.

The event was attended by members of the Marwari Foundation and local citizens.
