Gang of cyber crooks dupe Amazon of Rs 3 crore in Nagpur

Nagpur: In a sensational spoofing attack on e-commerce giant Amazon, a gang of cyber crooks defrauded the American multinational company to the tune of Rs 3 crore.

According to MIDC Police, the fraud amount is likely to touch Rs 16 crore. Hemant Kishor Pakhode (32), Station Manager of Amazon Transportation Services Pvt Ltd, Hingna Road, MIDC, lodged a complaint with the police that unidentified scammers made several accounts on Amazon using fake e-mail IDs and mobile numbers between April 9, 2022 and April 16, 2022.

Using these accounts, they used to order several branded products, including electronic gadgets of prominent companies. Though the gang never used to deliver the products but showed on record that they delivered the goods to customers and deposited the amount. They then used to claim the refund amount by returning the parcels sent by the company after cancellation of the cash on delivery orders.

Likewise, the gang fraudulently claimed the refund of Rs 3 crore by placing 5,731 fake orders. Following the complaint lodged by Pakhode (32), a resident of Plot No 38, Rajapeth, Nagpur, MIDC Police registered case under Sections 406, 419,420, 120 (B) of the Indian Penal Code, read with Sections 66, 66(c), 66(d) of the Information Technology Act and started the probe.

According to police, the possibility of involvement of some persons working with Amazon’s local unit or the courier partners cannot be ruled out. The loss suffered by the company due to fraud is likely to increase.
