Nagpur: A gang war erupted inside Nagpur Central Jail in which Chetan Hazare, the mastermind behind the sensational killing of gambling den operator Balya Binekar, was mercilessly attacked by his rival on Monday. The accused criminal has be4en identified as Sameer Ahmed Sagir Ahmed.
The pre-dawn clash took place at Nagpur Jail’s ‘badi gol’ barrack. Both the undertrials with serious criminal cases — Chetan Hazare and his alleged attacker Samir Ahmed Sagir — were lodged in the same barrack.
A jail guard, on patrolling duty, was alerted by the others after the fight broke out inside the barrack. The guard immediately alerted senior officials over wireless.
Samir is learnt to have broken a piece of the tin shed, turning it into a sharp knife-like weapon, to attack Hazare, who received a deep gash on his hand and was shifted to the prison’s in-house hospital.
Superintendent of Prison, Vaibhav Agey, said they have sent reports to the court about the incident.
It may be recalled that a prison constable was seriously injured when six inmates allegedly attacked him during a Diwali program at the Nagpur Central Jail in November last year. The incident took place during the `Diwali pahat’ cultural program organised in the jail.
An altercation broke out when the prison inmates were heading for the place inside the prison compound where the program had been organised and constable Rajendrasingh Thakur (36) asked them to stop. One of the accused picked up a steel bucket and hit him on the head, causing him a serious injury.
