Nagpur: The controversy over who should be given the contract for the development of Nagpur’s Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport has come to an end. The Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court has directed that the GMR Company should be awarded the contract. As a result, the dispute has now been resolved and the way has been cleared for the development of the airport which has been stalled for many years.
An appeal was filed against the said company by the Airports Development Authority of India and Mihan India. The court, doing justice to the said company, dismissed the appeal.
It is worth mentioning that earlier the entire process of the airport development contract was cancelled. GMR Airport and GMR Nagpur International Airport had filed a petition against it in the High Court. During the hearing, the controversial decision to quash the contract process was declared invalid.
Mihan India Company had invited tenders in 2016 for the development of the airport on PPP design, build, finance, operate and transfer basis. About 13 companies took part in it. Of these, four other companies, including GMR, were shortlisted for technical bidding. Thereafter, it was decided to award the contract to GMR Company, which was the highest bidder. GMR Nagpur International Airport was established with the permission of Mihan India. However, there was no satisfactory agreement on profit sharing. Hence, on March 19, 2020, Mihan India had cancelled the entire contract process.
GMR had initially bid 5.76 per cent of the total profit to Mihan India. This bid was higher than other companies.
