Gold worth Rs 44 lakh seized at Nagpur Airport

Nagpur: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) Nagpur has arrested one person in connection with smuggling gold weighing 743.56 grams worth approximately Rs 44 lakh at the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport. DRI has seized the passport of the accused and has handed over the matter to the Customs Department for enquiry.

The accused is Sachin Chandoskar, a resident of Ulhasnagar, Thane. He took an Air Arabia flight from Sharjah and arrived at Nagpur. He had hidden the gold in paste form in his underwear. DRI received intelligence that the gold smuggler had arrived from an Air Arabia flight. Officials laid a trap at Nagpur Airport to nab the smuggler. The DRI authorities searched him after noticing his suspicious behaviour.

During the search, 743.56 grams of gold was found hidden in the passenger’s underwear. After checking his travel history, it was found that he had visited India several times from Dubai. An official said that he had come to Nagpur for the first time from Sharjah to smuggle gold. There has been an increase in such incidents at Nagpur Airport. A few days ago, a gold smuggler was arrested by the Customs Department.
