Gondia: A lawyer has been sentenced to a fine of Rs 90 and 5 days in jail for allegedly displaying condemnable and inappropriate behavior towards the court in contempt.
On Monday, February 5, a hearing was scheduled for a land dispute case. During this, the lawyer for the plaintiff, Adv. Parag Tiwari, arrived late, upon which the Chief Justice Abhijit Kulkarni advised the plaintiff to change his lawyer. In response, Adv. Parag Tiwari expressed his objection, leading to a verbal dispute between Justice Kulkarni and Advocate Parag Tiwari.
The court gave the lawyer an opportunity to apologize unconditionally, however, the lawyer insisted that he stands by his comments and would not pay the fine (Rs 90 penalty). Subsequently, the court acknowledged that criticism of judges could affect the administration of justice as it becomes a form of public mischief. Therefore, in the case of contempt, the court reduced the sentence for the lawyer Parag Tiwari from 10 days to 5 days and imposed a fine of Rs 90. Advocate Parag Tiwari was immediately taken into custody from there and sent to jail.
In cases of contempt of court, it is likely the first case in Gondia where a lawyer has been sent to jail.
