Nagpur: In a significant development, the State Education Department has announced its decision to convert part-time librarian posts to full-time in government and aided schools. The move has been made due to the shortage of staff in these schools, and the department plans to fill all sanctioned full-time librarian posts.
According to the education department, there are 2,118 approved full-time librarian posts in the state, out of which only 926 are currently filled with full-time librarians. The remaining posts are held by part-time librarians. The hiring of librarians in schools is dependent on the number of students enrolled, a media report said.
The Education Department has identified 280 schools with 2,000-3,000 students and 53 schools with more than 3,000 students, which need 280 and 106 full-time librarians, respectively. The State Government plans to hire 386 full-time librarians by converting existing part-time posts to full-time positions.
The Education Department has released guidelines for choosing part-time librarians who will fill full-time posts. The move has been welcomed by school principals, who have emphasized the importance of librarians in schools, as they play a crucial role in encouraging students to read and improving literacy rates.
This decision by the State Education Department is likely to improve the quality of education in government and aided schools and will provide employment opportunities for part-time librarians. It is a step in the right direction, as it addresses the shortage of staff in schools and promotes literacy among students.
