Goons in Nagpur indulge in rampant thefts for drug money

Nagpur: The Crime Branch of Nagpur Police has launched a major crackdown on thieves and burglars, successfully solving nine cases in two separate operations. In recent times, the city police have intensified their efforts to combat vehicle thefts and burglaries, which had become a growing concern among the citizens.

Two of the arrested accused are allegedly drug addicts and engage in criminal activities to support their addictions.

In the first operation, Crime Branch Unit 3 apprehended two burglars and resolved seven cases. Last month, cash and valuables worth Rs 6.54 lakh were stolen from the residence of Mukesh Nipani in Vaishali Nagar.

Pachpaoli police registered a case of burglary and initiated an investigation. The Crime Branch commenced a parallel investigation. While examining CCTV footage from the crime scene, police got a vital clue regarding the vehicle used in the crime.

Subsequently, the police tracked down the accused, Ramakant alias Rambhau Prakash Shahu (27), a resident of Fukat Nagar, near Hanuman Mandir, and Narendra alias Bali Chintaman Bokde (23), a resident of Kundanlal Gupta Nagar. On intense questioning, the accused allegedly confessed to their involvement in three burglaries and four vehicle thefts. The police have recovered stolen items and three stolen vehicles, collectively valued at Rs 9.53 lakh.

Reports said that both the accused are allegedly drug addicts and engage in criminal activities to support their addictions. Ramakant is also wanted in connection with two burglary cases registered at Kalamna police station, they said.

In a separate incident, Crime Branch Unit 5 arrested three miscreants and solved two cases of vehicle thefts. The police were investigating a bike theft reported at Jaripatka police station, which led to the arrest of Akash Nagrale (27), Yogesh Chavhan (25), and Devendra Thakre (24).

The police said the accused were apprehended with the assistance of CCTV footage and on-ground intelligence. The authorities have recovered two stolen vehicles and seized the bike used in the crime, with a total value of Rs 1.20 lakh.

Reports said the majority of vehicle thefts occur in busy or market areas of the city. Also, most of the burglaries are reported on the city’s outskirts, falling under the jurisdiction of police stations such as Hudkeshwar, Wathoda, Pratap Nagar and others.
