Green Vigil Commemorated World Water Day !!

Nagpur: Green Vigil Foundation, Nagpur observed World Water Day (WWD) 2024 , by conducting a citizen Outreach Campaign on this year’s theme of world water day – “Water For Peace ” at Maharajbagh garden, Nagpur, engaging citizens on various water related issues, necessity of conservation of water resources, declining groundwater level, implementing Nature Based Solutions like rejuvenation and de- silting of lakes, rain water harvesting, treating waste waters including sewage before disposing in water bodies, creating buffer zones of vegetation along water courses etc. Citizens were also acquainted with water scarcity in Nagpur to be witnessed every summer and the crucial need to protect, conserve and adapt to it by implementing Water Sustainability practices and lowering their water footprints.

World Water Day is an International Observance annually celebrated on 22nd March to advocate Sustainable Management of Freshwater resources, designated in the year 1993, as recommended at United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janerio. A core focus of World Water Day is to inspire action towards Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030.

Members of Green Vigil also advocated “ Eco-Friendly Holi Celebration” and engaged citizens with colourful placards highlighting water scarcity, importance and need of water conservation, adopting Dry Holi or Tilak Holi- restricting wastage of water, using natural colours – gulab and herbal colours, avoiding water balloons, sparing dumb animals from the colour menace and keeping a check on burning plastics and other material during Holika Dehan ,releasing harmful gases in the atmosphere.

Surbhi Jaiswal, Team Lead, Green Vigil Foundation, described, water scarcity looming large across the world, after Cape town, a city in South Africa, now, our own Bangalore city is facing acute water crisis. Regarding Holi, she added, the colours available in market contains toxic substances like copper sulfate ( in green colour), aluminium bromide ( in silver colour), prussian blue ( in blue colour), mercury sulfate ( in red colour) and heavy metals like lead, chromium, cadmium, nickel, zinc, etc, which are highly injurious to health and few of them are cancer causing substances.

Green Vigil Team members Kaustav Chatterjee, Surbhi Jaiswal, Mehul Kosurkar, Sheetal Choudhary, Bishnudeo Yadav , Shriya Jogey, Priya Yadav, Parth Jumde, Kajal Pilley , Mitali Pandey, Aadarsh Sinha and others actively participated in the campaign.
