Nagpur: With the year ending, the defaulter Property Tax owners are in trouble as over 54% property taxpayers within the limits of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) will have to pay 2% interest if they fail to meet the December end deadline, a media report said.
According to the report, out of 6.15 lakh property owners, only 2.85 lakh have paid their tax. “The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has collected Rs 159 crore out of the Rs 272 crore target,” Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Revenue) Milind Meshram told the media.
To recover the mammoth arrears of Rs 750 crore, the civic body has intensified its drive. The NMC has attached 463 properties to recover outstanding tax amounting to Rs 10.44 crore. It has also started the process to auction properties of defaulters.
The NMC had announced a 10% (offline) and 15% (online) rebate to citizens if they pay their tax between April 1 and June 30. NMC gives 5% (offline) and 10% (online) rebate if payment is received in the period — July 1 to December 31.
“To create awareness among taxpayers, the NMC has already launched a campaign to appeal to property owners to pay their tax before December end to avail 5% (offline) and 10% (online) rebate,” added Meshram.
Just three months are left for the financial year to end. “We will auction properties if the owners fail to clear their dues,” he said.
Of the 10 zones, Hanuman Nagar has not informed the head office in Civil Lines about its plan against defaulters. The highest number of properties attached were from the Nehru Nagar zone. Here, the zone office attached 167 properties to recover Rs 3.90 crore tax, followed by 85 properties in Lakadganj which defaulted on tax amounting to Rs 90.62 lakh.
