Nagpur: Panic erupted at the Union Bank ATM on Ghat Road in Nagpur on Friday afternoon when a gunshot was fired in the vicinity. The security guard, while loading his gun, was found injured but thankfully, no other casualties were reported.
Identified as Babarao Daulatrao Dhangar, a 54-year old resident of Vijaya Nagar, Hingna, the guard has been employed by Radiant Guard Private Limited, Pune, to oversee security at the ATM on Ghat Road for the past eighteen months. Babarao, an ex-serviceman, is licensed to carry a 12 bore gun, said Ganeshpeth Police.
The incident occurred during a routine reloading procedure at 2.10 pm on Friday. Babarao typically unloads his gun before lunch and reloads it afterward. Babarao discharged the weapon which caused a bullet to shatter the glass. Miraculously, none of the occupants were harmed.
The unexpected gunfire triggered panic among bank staff and customers. Babarao received minor injuries in the accident. He was admitted to the hospital. The police arrived at the scene to investigate. Babarao was questioned, and a case has been registered as the investigation continues.
