Nagpur: Embattled Motor Vehicle Inspectors (MVIs) Geeta Shejwal and Sanket Gaikwad of the Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Nagpur faced suspension on Friday, as ordered by the Transport Department. The suspension stems from their involvement in a firing incident, where Gaikwad was suspected to have been shot by Shejwal, leading to subsequent attempts to conceal the matter.
The incident came to light following a persistent investigation conducted by the Crime Branch of the Nagpur Police. The duo’s attempt to cover up the details of the incident was eventually unravelled, prompting the Transport Department to take disciplinary action against them.
In the case of Geeta Shejwal, her efforts to secure ad-interim bail were unsuccessful in the High Court. The court highlighted Shejwal’s role in the incident and pointed out Sanket Gaikwad’s attempt to conceal the truth by suggesting it was a case of mishandling a service firearm resulting in injury.
The detailed observation on part of the High Court sealed their fate and earlier, City Police, too, had sought suspension of Shejwal as she was avoiding interrogation and was evading detection. She is under fire after being named accused in the attempt on the life of colleague Sanket Gaikwad in the aftermath of an alleged dispute, of which the exact details are still under probe.
Both Shejwal and Gaikwad are posted at Regional Transport Office, Nagpur. Shejwal was caught red handed by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) while posted at RTO’s Check Post at Kandri (Mansar) in 2023. She was caught accepting money from a trucker. Incidentally, this is Shejwal’s second suspension, the previous one being during her posting at Ahmednagar, where she was found to have allegedly indulged in irregularities in issuing fitness certificates to vehicles.
She faced departmental inquiry and remained under suspension for two years and subsequently reinstated and posted to RTO, Nagpur (Urban). The suspension order of Shejwal mentioned registration of offence of attempt to murder while in Gaikwad’s case, it is about involvement in destroying evidence pertaining to the case.
RTO Nagpur office has been hogging limelight for all the wrong reasons as dispute arose over illegal collections done at check posts. As the money distribution as per predetermined ratio did not take place, frequent disputes arose and the difference spilled over leading to allegations.
