Nagpur: In a poignant display of compassion and altruism, the family of the late Ramdas Singanjude, a 49-year-old car driver, turned a tragic incident into an opportunity to provide a new lease of life to others through organ donation. Despite Ramdas succumbing to severe head injuries sustained in a tragic accident in Bhandara, his motivated relatives brought his body to Nagpur, showcasing a rare example of commitment to organ donation.

The incident occurred on February 19, 2024, around 8:30 pm, when Ramdas was returning home. The accident resulted in a severe head injury, prompting immediate admission to the Government Hospital at Bhandara for primary treatment. Despite two days of intensive medical care, Ramdas did not respond to treatment. Medical examinations revealed bleeding in the brain, leading to irreversible neurological deterioration, ultimately resulting in brain death.

Undeterred by the tragedy, the family, consisting of his wife, Malti (47), and son, Nayan (19), made the compassionate decision to donate Ramdas’s organs. This decision stands out as a unique and commendable act, especially considering that the family took the extra step of bringing the deceased’s body to Nagpur for organ retrieval– a rare occurrence in the region.

Medical professionals, after conducting thorough tests and check-ups, confirmed the irreversibility of Ramdas’s condition. Counsellors and doctors played a pivotal role in guiding the family through the difficult decision-making process, emphasizing the critical importance and need for organ donation.

Dr Rahul Saxena, Secretary of ZTCC Nagpur, said that after counselling, the patient’s family was very much motivated for this noble cause. Since donation and retrieval takes place only at registered hospitals, the deceased was shifted to Alexis Hospital for organ donation. This is also the part of the new initiative taken up by Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC) for organ sharing across all districts in Vidarbha region as it sees tremendous increase in awareness for the cause, said Dr Rahul Saxena.

He further said that Dr Gopal Sarve, General Surgeon at Bhandara helped the family in clearing their doubts about organ donation. He also coordinated for shifting of the donor to Nagpur, pointed out Dr Sanjay Kolte, President of ZTCC. Preeti Jain (Coordinator, Alexis) counselled the relatives for the organ donation. The deceased’s elder brother Radheshyam Singanjude (60 years) gave consent to organ donation. His family agreed to donate two kidneys, a liver and corneas.

Accordingly, ZTCC comprising Dr Sanjay Kolte, Dr Rahul Saxena and Transplant Coordinator Dinesh Mandpe swung into action. The committee planned the distribution of the organs as per the waiting list. The Alexis Hospital staff created the honour corridor and paid tributes to the donor. The hospital also provided free ambulance service up to the native place of the deceased at Lahoti, Bela, district Bhandara.

One kidney was given to a 63-year old woman at Alexis Hospital, second was given to a 30-year old man at KIMS Kingsway hospital, liver to a 63-year old man at Alexis Hospital and a pair of corneas sent to Government Medical College and Hospital. Nagpur Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre is situated at Super Speciality Hospital. Its helpline number is – 9175999735 where people can call.
