The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are renowned as top engineering colleges, often leading in campus placements. However, a recent Right to Information (RTI) report has raised concerns about their placement records, revealing that this year, approximately 38% of IIT graduates are still unemployed.

IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, and the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) have sought assistance from their alumni networks to improve placement rates. Specifically, IIT Delhi is facing a significant challenge with over 400 students from its campus, and more than 7,000 students across all 23 IIT campuses, remaining unplaced.

Dheeraj Singh, an IIT Kanpur alumnus, filed multiple RTI applications that uncovered this worrying trend. The data shows a consistent struggle in recent years. In 2023, over 4,000 students, amounting to about 23%, did not secure placements. The previous year, in 2022, saw over 3,000 students, or roughly 19%, facing the same issue.

The RTI responses also revealed proactive measures taken by IIT Delhi. The institute has reached out to its alumni network, seeking support for the current batch of students. “As the placement drive for the 2023-24 session at IIT Delhi comes to a close, we are facing a significant challenge. Despite all our efforts, around 400 students have not yet secured jobs. We are contacting our student network to seek help in providing job opportunities for the current students,” stated IIT Delhi.

Similarly, BITS reached out to its alumni for support two months ago. At IIT Bombay, the placement process continues until the end of June, yet about 10% or 250 students have not been placed. Last year, 329 students from IIT Bombay remained unemployed, and 171 graduates from the 2022 session are still without jobs.
