Nagpur: Heavy rainfall on Saturday morning has once again wreaked havoc in Nagpur, the state’s sub-capital. The downpour led to flooding, causing water to accumulate on roads and infiltrate homes, creating numerous challenges for residents. However, the administration seems indifferent to the plight of Nagpur’s citizens.

Development Chaos in Nagpur:
From early morning, Nagpur experienced a thunderous downpour, receiving an average of 90 millimeters of rain in just three hours. The weather department has forecasted another three hours of heavy rainfall. This situation has led to chaos in the city, with residents complaining about being misled in the name of development. Cement road construction has caused water to flood homes, creating significant hardships for residents. Many have expressed their frustration.

High Cement Roads and Lack of Drainage System:
Before constructing cement roads, the Public Works Department failed to manage rainwater properly. In many areas, the partially completed cement roads have exacerbated the situation. While some sections of the cement roads have drainage systems, others do not, leading to water accumulation on the streets. Complaints have arisen about high cement roads with no water outlets, causing issues in several low-lying areas.

Water Infiltration in Ambazari Lake Area:
The heavy rainfall caused Nagpur’s Ambazari Lake to overflow, flooding nearby settlements. Previously, on September 23, 2023, a similar situation occurred, resulting in significant property damage. The ongoing controversy surrounding the relocation of the Swami Vivekananda statue near the lake has gained attention again. During the September 2023 floods, the statue’s construction obstructed the water flow, causing it to flood nearby areas. The demand to relocate the statue has gained momentum. Additionally, construction of tall buildings near the lake might lead to similar problems, highlighting the need for attention to this issue.
