Nagpur: A severe downpour on Saturday caused widespread flooding across Nagpur, submerging more than 500 localities. From early morning to noon, the city recorded an astonishing 227.2 mm of rainfall in just seven hours, creating a flood-like situation.

Numerous homes and streets were inundated, with residents finding themselves in knee-deep water. The relentless rain started at 5 AM and continued until 12 PM, resulting in overflowing drains and widespread chaos. This event marks the first significant rainfall of the monsoon season for Nagpur, following a long period of intense heat.

Areas like Wathoda, Pardi, Chikhli, HB Town, Vardhaman Nagar, Kesar Matanagar, Baba Farid Nagar, Gayatri Nagar, Aradhana Nagar, Swavalambi Nagar, Deendayal Nagar, Ravindra Nagar, Deputy Signal, Swaminarayan Temple, Kalamna, Wathoda Layout, Gopalkrishna Nagar, Vidya Nagar, Sankalp Nagar, and Shesh Nagar were severely affected. The Kalamna drain area and other low-lying parts were particularly hard-hit, with many homes submerged and hundreds of residents needing relocation to safer places.

In southern Nagpur, areas like Manewada, Besa Road, Ghogli Road, and Hudkeshwar Road saw similar flooding, cutting off access to the main city. Streets like the Shatabdi Chowk to Manish Nagar Road were completely waterlogged, halting traffic. Northern areas such as Vaishali Nagar, Indora, Dixit Nagar, KGN Society, and Friends Colony also faced significant flooding, with water flowing over bridges and underpasses completely submerged.

The heavy rainfall also caused widespread power outages, with many localities losing electricity due to fallen trees and damaged power lines. Schools and colleges were closed for the day following an alert from the weather department and district administration.

Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who is also the Guardian Minister for Nagpur, stated that the city’s life had been severely disrupted by the heavy rainfall. He assured that he was in constant contact with the Divisional Commissioner, District Collector, and local administration, who were actively managing the situation. Evacuations were carried out in submerged areas, and all efforts were made to ensure the safety and well-being of the affected residents. Some roads in the Kuhi area were closed, and the connection to certain parts of Gadchiroli was lost. All administrative units were put on high alert to handle the crisis effectively.
