Incessant rains force release of water from 18 dams in Nagpur district

Nagpur: Incessant rains have claimed 10 lives in Nagpur district during the last 24 hours. This includes six who died after their vehicle was swept away in Saoner. The latest toll includes the death of 33-year-old Yogesh Raut who was swept away at Sai Nagar Nullah at Mankapur and 39-year-old Dattu Madhukar in Katol. Rains have claimed 20 persons in the district so far including 12 deaths due to lightning strikes.

In the last 24 hours alone the district received 91.09 mm of rain. Water is being released from all 18 dams in the district. Three dams have water levels up to 100%.

A couple of villages in Ramtek, Mouda and Umred tehsils have been cut off. The situation is not critical as normalcy is expected to return after the water recedes, said District Collector R Vimala. Nagpur district has received 476 mm of rainfall so far which is over 100 mm more than the average for the period. Orange alert will continue till Thursday.

The large dams include Navegaon Khairi at Parseoni where all 17 gates have been opened by 0.3 meters. Gates of the Wadgaon dam on Nand river have also been opened. Nagpur district is affected by backwaters of Gosikhurd dam in Bhandara as its gates have been opened too.People have been advised not to venture out. The district administration has provided helpline numbers 0712-2562668 and 1077 for assistance.

Orange is one stage before red alert when floods are expected. Met department has sounded a yellow alert on Friday and Saturday. Last year, there were around 19 deaths due to lightning throughout the season. This year, the toll is 12 so far. Warnings have been issued to farmers on not venturing out during rains as there was risk of being hit by lightning.

Dams in Nagpur division have more than 50% water stock:

As Nagpur Division witnessed continuous rainfall for the last one week, the water levels in most of the major dams in the division crossed 50% mark of their designed storage capacity.

Totladoh dam, which is the major source of water for Nagpur city and one of the biggest dams in the division, had 62.76% water stock on Wednesday. Kamptee Khairy, another dam in Nagpur district, had 98.43% water stock on Wednesday. Due to heavy rains in Madhya Pradesh the water level increased in Kamptee Khairy. Other dams of Nagpur district, like Khindsi, Nand and Wadgaon have also crossed the water stock above 50%.
