Inter-state gang of mobile phone thieves busted in Nagpur, 5 arrested

All the gang members including three juveniles hailed from Jharkhand and West Bengal

Nagpur: With the arrest of five persons hailing from Jharkhand and West Bengal, the Nagpur Crime Branch’s Unit-4 on Tuesday claimed to have busted an inter-state gang involved in stealing mobile phones. Cops also took three juvenile delinquents into custody who were also involved in the crime. Police recovered 11 stolen cell phones and a motorcycle collectively worth Rs 2.05 lakh from them.

The accused have been identified as Sheikh Mehtab Sheikh Kaleem (22), Sheikh Joni Sheikh Makruddin (27), Sheikh Tifer Sheikh Nasruddin (19), Sheikh Shoaib Sheikh Umar (23), all residents of Maharajpur, district Sahibganj, Jharkhand, Imtiyaz Mehboob Alam (21), a resident of Farakka, Murshidabad,West Bengal, and three teenage boys in conflict with the law.

The gang had stolen a smartphone worth Rs 6000 from Nilesh Datta Barlawar (43), a resident of Pradhan Mantri Aawaas Yojna, Wathoda, when he was buying vegetables at the weekly market on October 6. During investigation, police came to know that a gang from Jharkhad was active in the city.

On the basis of the information, cops raided a few houses at Wanjra Basti and apprehended the accused gang members and recovered 11 mobile phone handsets and a bike. Initial investigation revealed that the gang had committed similar thefts in Wathoda, Sakkardara,and Sitabuldi areas in the city as well as in Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh.

The arrests were made by PI Kamlakar Gaddime, PSI Avinash Dhamgaye and others under the supervision of Senior Crime Branch officials.
