Nagpur: The iconic song ‘Budhham Sharnam Gachhami, Dharmam Sharnam Gachhami…..’, other revering renserings reverberated across the city and an array of programmes marked the 125th birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar here on Thursday. In fact the celebrations commenced at the stroke of 12 in the midnight as crackers were burst in several pockets of the city heralding the celebrations. The sunrise saw dozens and dozens of colourful rallies being taken out by followers of the architect of the Indian constitution on his 125th birth anniversary here on Thursday.
The atmosphere at monumental Deekshabhoomi turned vibrant and wore a festive look as thousands of followers paid their respect to the Dalit icon. The followers greeted each other with ‘Jai Bhim’ broad smile on their faces. Sweets were distributed to one and all. Different political, social organisations organised cultural programmes, rallies and blood donation camps on the occasion. The 125th birth anniversary of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar was also celebrated in Government offices, private establishments, schools and colleges across the city.
Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar was born on April 14, 1891. One of the principal architects of the Indian Constitution, Ambedkar’s contribution will always be recognised in history. A social reformer, a champion of human rights and an emancipator of the downtrodden masses of India, Ambedkar had a vast repertoire of books to his credit.
This year, for the first time, the United Nations will observe the birth anniversary of Dr Ambedkar, with a focus on combating inequalities to achieve Sustainable Development Goals.
