Janmashtami celebrations illuminate Nagpur

Nagpur: The Second Capital of Maharashtra is buzzing with enthusiasm as devotees celebrate Janmashtami, the festival that marks the birth of Lord Krishna. Temples across the city are adorned with vibrant decorations, and the idols of Krishna are dressed in new clothes and glittering jewellery, reflecting the devotion of the faithful. At midnight, devotees will gather for prayers, as it is believed that Lord Krishna was born at this auspicious hour.

The boundless Lord Krishna, revered as the almighty, is believed to manifest in various forms– within idols, in the hearts of His devotees, in the fragrance of flowers, in the offerings made with love, and in the air filled with the chant “Shrikrishna Govind Hare Murari.”

To commemorate Shrikrishna Janmashtami and the foundation day of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, the Shrikrishna Janmotsav Shobhayatra Samiti organized a grand procession from Shrikrishna Mandir, Gorakshan Sabha, Dhantoli, on Sunday. The vibrant shobhayatra featured traditional songs and dances, including the “Raslila,” which portrays the life and playful antics of Lord Krishna.

In Nagpur and other parts of Maharashtra, the “Dahi Handi” event is a major highlight of the festival. Teams form human pyramids to break a pot filled with curd, symbolizing Krishna’s love for butter. The festival is celebrated with devotion, joy, and cultural performances, bringing the community together in a shared expression of faith and festivity.
