Nagpur: The month of January, 2022, brought broad smiles on the stone-faced City Police as the month witnessed lowest crime rate in the last three years, according to media reports. The major achievement could be attributed to the slew of anti-crime steps initiated by Nagpur’s Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar, the report added.
According to the media report and statistics of the City Police, on an average, 20 cases were registered per day in January this year (611 in the entire month) as compared to 24 per day in January 2021 (747 whole month). In January 2020, 21 cases per day (638 whole month) were registered. The stern anti-crime measures proved fruitful as January 26 this year registered only nine offences in a day while the maximum 28 cases were registered on January 17 and 19. In the first nine days of February this year, on an average 19 cases were registered per day which was less than the whole month’s average of 27 in February last year and 21 in February in 2020.
The report further stated that in January this year, 54 cases of housebreaking were registered, less than 74 in January 2021 and 58 in January 2020. Similarly, the month also saw robbery cases declining with 15 cases this year as compared to 22 cases in January last year. January, 2020 had registered 13 cases. Thefts reduced from 242 last year to 199 this year in January, more than 187 in January in 2020.
According to the Top Cop, the average Nagpur’s murder cases were around eight but it has been brought down by around 50% in December 2021 and again in January this year. The average cases getting registered in a month in Nagpur City had been around 800 since the last several years but this year the city police could restrict it to little more than 600, said the Commissioner of Police, adding the police has been working on a mission mode since the last one year.
The Commissioner of Police Kumar had invoked the dreaded Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities (MPDA) Act against hardened criminals time and again in Nagpur. Preventive actions for the last one year also showed the desired from towards the end of last year. Basic policing of preventive action, police presence at public places and proactive measures like curtailing response time, stress on detections and investigations were the highlights of the department’s working.
According to the media report, on an average, around 80-90 cases of injuries were being registered per month every year. The City Police brought it down and now are aiming for 60-65 per month by chasing and sending goons with such tendencies behind bars invoking various types of preventive measures and legal provisions, said the CP.
