Nagpur: Dhantoli Police in Nagpur have registered a case against disqualified Congress MLA Sunil Kedar, who was convicted in a bank scam last month, for taking out a huge procession and disrupting traffic after his release from jail here, an official said on Thursday.
Police also detained as many as 12 cars and jeeps of his supporters.
Kedar, the five-term MLA from Saoner in Nagpur district, was sentenced to five years in jail on December 22, 2023, by a magistrate’s court here in a case related to irregularities at the Nagpur District Central Cooperative Bank (NDCCB) of which he was chairman from 1999 to 2002.
The Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court on Tuesday granted him bail and also suspended his sentence temporarily. Kedar was released from the Nagpur Central Jail around 11 am on Wednesday.
According to police, thousands of supporters of Kedar had assembled outside the jail to welcome the Congress leader. After he walked out, Kedar took out a procession with his supporters by standing in a car with a retractable roof.
Since the presence of too many people threw vehicular movement out of gear, the Dhantoli police registered a case against the Congress leader.
Convicted along with five others in the infamous Rs 153 crore Nagpur District Central Cooperative Bank (NDCCB) scam by a magisterial court and sentenced to five years imprisonment with a fine of Rs 10 lakh each, Kedar moved the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court challenging the lower court’s order. On Tuesday, the High Court suspended his sentence temporarily and granted bail to him.
On Wednesday, Kedar was released from jail. His supporters including Zilla Parishad (ZP) Vice President Kunda Raut, ZP committee chairperson Avantika Lekurwale, former ZP Vice President Manohar Kumbhare, Ravindra Chikhle, Anil Rai, Sanjay Meshram, assembled outside the jail to welcome him. The convicted former minister then took out a rally by standing in a car with a sunroof. As a result, the vehicular traffic was thrown out of gear on Gowari flyover and other thoroughfares.
Police registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Motor Vehicle Act against Kedar and his supporters.
