Nagpur: Alarmed over the recklessly driven trucks killing people in Nagpur, the Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar has formed 12 Accident Prevention Squads (APS), based at different police stations, to analyse the ‘black’ or vulnerable spots where maximum fatal accidents have taken place in the year 2021. Statistics revealed that out of 270 persons killed in road accidents in Nagpur City last year, 140 were the victims of rash driving by truckers. The Top Cop has also issued orders for initiating stringent action against heavy vehicles that are found violating traffic rules.

The City Police have identified Hingna, Wadi, MIDC, Gittikhadan, Mankapur, Wathoda, Beltarodi, Hudkeshwar, New Kamptee, Yashodhara Nagar, Jaripatka and Kalamna police stations as ‘high risk’ ones for prevention of accidents. The accident prevention squads have been activated at these ‘high risk’ police stations.

The Commissioner of Police further said that the issue was taken up on top priority and DCPs concerned have been instructed for immediate action to prevent road fatalities. The DCPs will also review action by the squads every week and issue necessary instructions. The DCPs have been asked to take stern action against truck drivers for reckless driving in city limits.

Apart from writing to concerned agencies, like NMC, National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), and PWD, the city police have also embarked upon assessment, scrutiny and risk management of 90 places earmarked as black and vulnerable spots. Most of the 257 fatal accidents have taken place at these spots in 2021. A joint survey of police and other departments has already taken place for risk assessment and mitigation measures at these accident-prone spots.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Traffic and his team had already surveyed the black spots for risk assessment studies. Now the additional 12 squads at different police stations will carry out micro-level assessment of the accident spots. The police station level squads would be under zonal DCPs for ascertaining the cause of accidents at such places and shall work to get them sorted out.
