Nagpur: Relatives of a patient, who died during treatment at Government Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) in Nagpur, assaulted a few resident doctors, para-medical staff and a technician at the Radiology Department on Monday afternoon.
The incident again raised questions on security of doctors, especially those working inside clinical investigation labs, where only patient and a relative, if needed, is allowed. Dr Shubham Mahale (JR, surgery), Dr Prachi Agrawal, Dr Rahul Agrawal (both JR, radiology), and a BBMT student, were at the receiving end as the relatives became aggressive.
Security guards caught two of the violent relatives of the deceased and called the police. According to reports, Kamlesh Yadav (35), a resident of Ajni area, was admitted to the GMCH due to some serious intestinal ailment. As his condition started deteriorating around 6 am, he was admitted to Ward 51. In the afternoon, he was taken to the Radiology Department for a CT scan where he breathed his last.
His relatives manhandled the doctors and staff alleging that they did not take proper care of the patient. Later, Ajni police personnel too reached the spot, and rounded up three relatives for thrashing the doctors. Senior PI Nitin Phatangare said that no FIR was registered as the doctors refused to file a complaint. The three relatives were allowed to go home later. “The doctors and relatives said the incident happened due to miscommunication between them,” he said.
According to the GMCH Dean Dr Raj Gajbhiye, they were ready to file an FIR at the institute level, but the cops insisted that the victims need to be a complainant in this case. “No one was injured in the incident,” he said.
