Lady cop acquitted of graft charges in Nagpur

Nagpur: The Special Court of R J Rai in Nagpur has acquitted a lady constable Manisha Sakharkar of the charges of corruption under Sections 7, 13(1)(d), 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The constable was accused of demanding Rs 10,000 bribe from a complainant who had come to Kalamna Police Station to lodge a report against the alleged threats meted out to him by his wife and in-laws.

The complainant lodged a complaint with ACB, Nagpur against the lady cop, the prosecution stated in the court. The prosecution claimed that tainted money was given to the complainant who along with a panch went to the police station to hand over the tainted currency notes to the accused and audio recordings were conducted.

The panch claimed to be a witness to all these happenings. The accused was arrested and chargesheeted. Appearing for the defendant constable, Adv Prakash Naidu argued that the prosecution had failed to prove the transcript of the alleged voice recordings in conformity with the laws.

It was also pointed out that in the cross-examination the panch admitted that he was standing outside the police station and could not witness the happenings and the conversation. Hearing both sides, the Special Court acquitted the accused of the charges.

Advocate Prakash Naidu, Homesh Chauhan, Mitesh Bais, Surabhi Godbole (Naidu) and Dhruv Sharma represented the accused lady constable.
