Who’s got more megapixels this is the current trend for smartphone manufacturers. Since 2019 began, smartphone manufacturers are competing in terms of megapixel count on cameras. The 48-megapixel sensors from Samsung and Sony have made it possible for vendors to offer these high-resolution cameras even on budget smartphones. However, Qualcomm hinted that 2019 may see cameras with up to 100-megapixels and Lenovo has just teased a phone that will debut such a camera commercially.

Chang Cheng, VP of Lenovo Group, has teased on Weibo about the upcoming Lenovo smartphone. The teaser hints that Lenovo could be unveiling the successor to the recently launched Z5 Pro GT the Z6 Pro. While details about the phone are scarce at the moment, Cheng has given out hints of the smartphone sporting a 100-megapixel camera. There’s no mention of how the camera can do it but the Z6 Pro is the first Lenovo smartphone to come with the hyped 100-megapixel camera. A leaked image also hints at a single camera for the rear.

Earlier, Qualcomm said that 2019 may see the arrival of 100-megapixel cameras in smartphones. Therefore, it was expected that a Chinese manufacturer would unveil such a sensor to the world. However, it is expected that the 100-megapixel camera won’t actually have a billion pixels on a sensor and instead, would rely on Pixel Binning to achieve a picture resolution of 100-megapixels.

Currently, the 48-megapixel sensors from Samsung and Sony rely on the same technique to snap 48-megapixel photos. These sensors take photos in 12-megapixel mode by default and need to be manually switched to 48-megapixel mode. With Pixel Binning, the 48-megapixel sensors can capture even more details in the 12-megapixel mode with Pixel Binning.

So far, a 100-megapixel camera is expected to use Pixel Binning for stitching together multiple shots to get a 100-megapixel shot. Apart from the camera, the Z6 Pro is expected to come with a Snapdragon 855 chipset. Lenovo could offer it with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage for the lower variants. It’s not known whether the Z6 Pro will get a slider display or a notched display design.
