Nagpur: In a development that would push Majhi Metro project of Nagpur ahead, the very first girder segment of elevated viaduct on North-South Corridor was launched successfully in the small hours of 3 am on Friday (August 5, 2016).
The 2-metre long segment casted in Jamtha Casting Yard was transported to the site near Hotel Pride by a multi axle trailer and erected on supporting structure by a heavy duty 200-Metric Tonne capacity crane. The segment weighs 39 MTs. It is part of the first 25-metre span girder which will be launched segment by segment in next few days. This will be pre-stressed together using high tensile strength wires to form one full girder of 25 metres. There will be a total of 1240 spans in elevated viaduct of Nagpur Metro and this is the first very span from Pier No. 12 to Pier No. 13. Commencement of segment erection process is a historic development and a milestone achieved by the project.
Normally the viaduct section has 10.3 m top width; however NMRCL optimized this section and the top width has been optimized to 8.5-metre, thereby achieving considerable economy in construction cost. NMRCL is also using built-in parapets so as to avoid separate launching of parapets. The move will also result in reduction of construction activity.
