Nagpur: Additional Sessions Judge Ms M V Deshpande on Wednesday sentenced Kishor Sukhdeo Soyam to life imprisonment for brutally killing his two-year-old daughter. The horrifying incident had taken place at Ganeshpur in Hingna Taluka of Nagpur district in March 2021 stemming from Soyam’s suspicions regarding his wife’s fidelity.
Soyam (26), originally from Uttiumarwahi, Sindewahi taluka, district Chandrapur, had been in a relationship with Puja (23), a fellow villager, for four years before they married in 2017 at the Sindewahi court. The couple relocated to Ganeshpur and found work as labourers in a Butibori factory. However, their relationship deteriorated after the birth of their daughter, Radhika, in 2018.
Soyam, who became increasingly suspicious of Puja, doubted that Radhika was not his biological child. His mistrust led to violent behaviour and after Puja gave birth, he misbehaved with her, prompting her to leave for her native village with her mother and the newborn. She eventually returned to live with Soyam, but his alcoholism and abusive behaviour continued forcing Puja to work in an oil factory to support the family.
The horrifying incident unfolded on March 1, 2021, when Soyam returned home in an inebriated condition and demanded Rs 1,000 from Puja to buy more alcohol. When she refused, he assaulted her, leading Puja to seek help from the MIDC Bori Police Station. Upon her return with the police, they found the door of the house latched from the inside. As the door was forced open, the police found that Soyam had slit his daughter’s throat with a razor. He also attempted suicide by slitting his throat but survived.
The police rushed the critically injured Radhika and Soyam to the hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival. Following Puja’s complaint, Soyam was arrested after receiving medical treatment and charged under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. Police investigated the case and filed a chargesheet against Soyam. The court examined as many as 14 witnesses during the trials. As the charges were proved against Soyam, the court sentenced him to life imprisonment with a fine of Rs 5,000.
