Nagpur: Additional Sessions Judge Ms R J Pawar in Nagpur on Monday sentenced Ashish alias Dhiraj alias Mombatti Umeshrao Jodh to life imprisonment for the murder of his friend, Amol Vasantrao Shillar. The court found Ashish (31) guilty of the crime which occurred during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020.
The incident unfolded on July 1, 2020 in Ashirwad Nagar, Sakkardara, Nagpur, where both accused and deceased resided. Amidst the lockdown restrictions on alcohol sales, Ashish came to know that Amol had liquor at his house. However, after Amol refused to share the liquor, a heated argument ensued, prompting Ashish to attack Amol with a sharp weapon near Trikoni Garden, Sakkardara.
Amol (34) was rushed to Government Medical College & Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Following a complaint by Amol’s elder brother, Satish Shillar (40), Ashish was arrested under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code, along with Section 135 of the Maharashtra Police Act. Assistant Police Inspector Raju Vastawade conducted the investigation, gathering evidence that solidified the charges against Ashish. The court also imposed a fine of Rs. 5,000, with a stipulation that failure to pay would result in an additional six months of imprisonment.
Additionally, the court awarded one year rigorous imprisonment to him for the offence under Section 135 of the Maharashtra Police Act, with a fine of Rs 2,000 or three months in jail for non-payment.
Additional Public Prosecutor Adv Pankaj Tapase represented the State. ASI Surendra Raurale and police constables Shilpa Itankar and Vidya Tomar assisted him in the court-related work.
