Nagpur: A man murdered his live-in partner in sleep in Beed Ganeshpur village, within the jurisdiction of MIDC-Butibori Police Station near Nagpur, and later tried to end his life.
Accused Ranjit Natthu Chaudhary (48), strangled Sunita (45) to death, and later attempted to commit suicide by slitting his own throat with a sharp-edged weapon, said police.
According to police, Sunita, a mother of three from her first marriage, had been in a live-in relationship with Ranjit for the past eight years. Ranjit had recently returned to Beed Ganeshpur after concluding his work in Pune. The incident occurred around 10 pm on Sunday when an argument over money escalated between the couple. The police said that the dispute took a turn for the worse around 1.30 am as Ranjit strangled Sunita to death while she was sleeping.
At around 8.30 am, Ranjit slit his own throat with a knife. A neighbour, suspecting something wrong, enquired about Sunita, but Ranjit said that she was asleep and closed the door. However, the neighbour, with the help of others, forcefully entered the residence after half an hour and found Sunita dead on the floor and Ranjit unconscious.
A police team, led by API Rajiv Karmalwar, reached the scene. Sunita’s body was sent to Government hospital for post-mortem, while Ranjit, in critical condition, was admitted for medical treatment. Their children, residing in the adjacent room, were informed of the tragedy.
The MIDC Butibori Police have registered a case of murder and are probing the matter further.
