Nagpur: Three persons have been arrested following a two-week investigation into a brutal attack on a woman in the Pratap Nagar Police Station area of Nagpur.
Investigation revealed that the attack, which took place on August 1, was a contract killing ordered by the nephew of the woman for Rs 1 lakh. The arrested accused are Siddhant Gulati (46), a resident of Trimurti Nagar; Kunal Shambharkar (33) from Butibori, and Sahil Kamble (19) of Dobi Nagar.
Siddhant, who operates a momos and Chinese food stall, had hatched the conspiracy to kill his aunt, Kareena Amritpal Singh Khurana (57). Kunal and Sahil, both unemployed, were hired to carry out the attack in exchange for a payment of Rs 1 lakh, said police officials. The motive behind the contact killing stemmed from Siddhant’s grudge against Kareena.
Siddhant’s family had previously lived in an apartment owned by Kareena’s abroad-based sisters. After being asked to vacate the property, Siddhant believed Kareena had a hand in the eviction which fuelled his resentment. On August 1, Siddhant provided Kunal with a rod and instructed him to attack Kareena, who was leaving her beauty parlour in Swavalambi Nagar. The two assailants, who had altered their vehicle’s number plate, assaulted Kareena and fled the scene.
Kareena was seriously injured in the attack. Initially, the family suspected nothing, and the case was registered against unknown assailants. The breakthrough came when clearer images of the accused were identified through footage from various CCTV cameras. Kunal’s routine visits to Siddhant’s shop helped the police in linking him to the crime. All three accused have been handed over to the Pratap Nagar Police for further investigation.
