Nagpur News: Professor K. P. Patil, former Vice- chancellor of North Maharashtra University, Jalgaon, said, “Mathematics gives students employment only in the field of lectureship and research nowadays, because of which students want to be Engineers and Doctors instead.” He was delivering the keynote address on the topic of “Training in Mathematics Research and Development” at the International Conference on Mathematical Sciences being held at Shivaji Science College in the city.
The Mathematical Conference was organized in commemoration of the year being declared as “National Mathematical Year” by the government of India, on the occasion of Srinivasa Ramanujam’s 125th birth anniversary.
Mr. Patil further said, “Today, mathematics is the last option for students. It should be the first option. Contributory teachers are being brought in to teach a valuable subject like Mathematics in colleges. Students consequently see the subject as boring and difficult. This is why students of Mathematics do not come forward into the field of research.” He added, “The researcher and Research Institute must collaborate and do research for the welfare of society. The simplest form of Maths is required the most. Technique and Science is based on Mathematics. It is the one subject which is used in many other fields, thus playing a vital role in the development of any nation.”
The conference, organized over four days from December 28 to December 31, brings together academicians and experts in the field from Universities in the USA, South Africa, Australia, Turkey, Spain, Russia, New Zealand, Hungary, Italy, Bangladesh, Botswana and different parts of India. Talks and paper presentations will be held simultaneously at multiple venues within the College campus at Congress Nagar, culminating in a Valedictory Programme on the 31st.
