Claims men’s singles crown, Rakhi too triumphs

Nagpur: Navbharat’s Ameya Manke stunned defending champion Ashish Jain of Lokmat to win men singles crown in Gaikwad-Patil International School-SJAN Media Badminton Tournament organised by Sports Journalists’ Association of Nagpur (SJAN) in association with Department of Sports and Physical Education of RTM Nagpur University at Subhedar Hall, here on Monday.

Giant-killer Manke created two major upsets in the tournament on Monday. In the men’s singles final, third seeded Mank surprised Jain 21-19, 15-21, 21-9 in three games. Earlier, he shocked second seed Suhas Nayse of ToI 21-12, 21-23, 21-15 and entered the finals. In the second semi-final, Jain overcame Fakhruddin Bora (ToI) 21-12, 21-15.

In the women singles final, Rakhi Chavan retained the title defeating Meenal Jain of Lokmat 21-18, 21-16.

In the mixed doubles category, Manke- Kajal Chopde (Navbharat) and Suhas Nayse-Deblina Dasgupta (ToI) entered the final.

Due to hectic schedule, the tournament has been extended by one day. On Tuesday mixed doubles final, men’s doubles semis and men’s doubles final will be played from 9 am followed by prize distribution ceremony.

Principal of Gaikwad-Patil International School Shabih Chaurasia, NDBA Secretary Mangesh Kashikar and Acting Director of Department of Sports and Physical Education of RTM Nagpur University Prof Atmaram Pande will grace the occasion.

Men’s singles semis: Ashish Jain (Lokmat) bt Fakhruddin Bora (ToI) 21-12, 21-15; Ameya Manke (Navbharat) bt Suhas Nayse ( ToI) 21-12, 21-23, 21-15.

Final: Ameya Manke bt Ashish Jain 21-19,15-21,21-9.

Women singles final: Rakhi Chavan (Loksatta) bt Meenal Jain (Lokmat) 21-18, 21-16.

Mixed doubles semis: Ameya Manke- Kajal Chopde ( Navbharat) bt Ashish Jain- Meenal Jain ( Lokmat) 21-18, 21-16, Suhas Nayse- Deblina Dasgupta( ToI) bt Raviraj- Sunita Ambadwar ( Lokmat) 21-15, 22-24, 21-19.
