Dr. Nisha Bano Siddiqui, Assistant Professor, Institute of Management Studies (IMS), Devi Ahilya University, Indore was the resource person for the expert lecture. The lecture started with warm welcome. She gave a brief introduction about Intellectual Property. Dr. Siddiqui explained that intellectual property rights confer exclusive legal rights on the owners, limiting others’ access to the same. She elucidated over the concept of Domain name; where she explained that it’s the name that comes after the @ symbol in email addresses and after the www. symbol in web addresses. A domain name is the address of a website. This is what potential clients put into their browser’s search box to get to a particular website. A domain name is unique and cannot be shared by several websites.

Further she explained the registration of a domain name which establishes a set of Start of Authority (SOA) records in the DNS servers of the parent domain, indicating the IP address (or domain name) of DNS servers that are authoritative for the domain. This provides merely a reference for how to find the domain data – not the actual domain data.

Further she explained the significance of registration of a domain name which enables the organisation to have an online presence, which is essential for building its reputation and credibility. Due to the fact that millions of people can access the website

In order to reserve a domain name in a gTLD, a domain name registrant must register it with an ICANN-accredited registrar. The registrar will check if the domain name is available for registration and create a WHOIS record with the domain name registrant’s information. It is also possible to register domain names through a registrar’s resellers. She elaborated various cases related to the topic and answered all the questions raised by the participants.

The expert lecture was conducted in virtual mode and moderated by Ms. Shweta Kulkarni and Ms. Trupti Kokate, Research Assistants, DPIIT-IPR Chair, MNLU, Nagpur. The expert lecture was registered by more than 150 participants including academicians, research scholars, and students from all over India.
