MNLU Nagpur Hosts Second National Moot Court Competition

Nagpur: Maharashtra National Law University, Nagpur organised its 2stNational Moot Court Competition in the field of Constitutional Law, Criminal Lawand Technology Law from February 17, 2023 to February 19, 2023.

The moot court proposition sought to discuss the much-discussed contemporary issue of the regulation of decryption technology. The conundrum on the alleged overstepping of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 on Fundamental Rights of the citizens of India was attempted to be resolved by the participants throughout the various rounds. Furthermore, the proposition also dealt with the aspects of immunity regarding parliamentary privileges, data privacy and freedom of speech and expression.

The competition, which was conducted in the physical mode,witnessed participation from twentygovernment and private law colleges and universities from all around the country, competing amongst themselves in twenty-four courtrooms. The teams qualifying for the finals had the opportunity to compete before extremely learned and imminent judges. The bench comprised of Hon’ble Shri. Justice G.A. Sanap, Judge, Bombay High Court (Bench at Nagpur); Sr. Adv. Ganapati Hegde (Partner, Dua Associates);Adv. Sangram Sirpurkar (Advocate at Bombay High Court); Ms. Veena Sivramakrishnan (Partner, ShardulAmarchandMangaldas& Co.);and Mr. Abhinav Maker (Partner,ShardulAmarchandMangaldas& Co.).Hon’ble Shri. Justice G.A. Sanap, Judge, Bombay High Court (Bench at Nagpur) was Chief Guest in the valedictory function and declared the winner of the competition.

All other judges, who were present in the valedictory function as special guest of honour also addressed the students on the skills of advocacy. The Guests were welcomed by Prof.(Dr.) Vijender Kumar, Vice Chancellor and vote of thanks was proposed by Prof.(Dr.) V.P. Tiwari, who was instrumental in developing mooting culture at MNLU, Nagpur.

Five prizes were up for bagging during the event. The winner team Vellore Institute of Technology, Chennai, won a cash prize of INR 21,000/- and the trophy. SKVM Pravin Gandhi College of Law, Mumbai,were the runners-up bagging a cash prize of INR 15,000/- along with the trophy. Symbiosis Law School NOIDA, Uttar Pradesh; O.P. Jindal Global University, Haryana;Vellore Institute of Technology, Chennai, respectively bagged the Best Speaker, Best Memorial and Best Researcher awards along with a cash prize of INR 7,000 each.

The competition was conducted under the dynamic leadership of Prof (Dr.) Vijender Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, MNLU, Nagpur and the Patron-in-Chief of the competition; Patrons- Dr. Ashish J. Dixit, Registrar and theFaculty Advisors of the Moot Court Committee (MCC)- Prof. (Dr.) V.P. Tiwari, Professor of Law; Dr. DivitaPagey,Ms. Aarti Anant Tayde;and Ms. Preeti, all Assistant Professors of Law. The competition was efficiently organized by the team of student members of MCC- Mr. Ayush Rastogi, Convenor, MCC; Mr. Ameya Garud; Ms. Ioli Shukla; Mr. Gaurav Khatwani; Mr. Jatin Shrivastava; Mr. Rudraksh Pathak; Mr. ShivbaDighade, Ms. Vaishnavi Bhatia, Mr. Atharva Giratkar, Mr. Kartik Dudani and Mr. Jainendra Singh.
The successful completion of the 2nd Maharashtra National Law University, Nagpur National Moot Court Competition 2023 marks an important milestone in the legacy of the University.
