Nagpur: Ambazari Police in Nagpur arrested a moneylender for allegedly trying to extort Rs 2.40 crore from Dr Narendra Wasudeorao Ghike, Director of Imaging Point, a diagnostic laboratory, x-ray, ECG and Scanning Centre, situated on West High Court Road, Dharampeth after threatening to him and his family.
The accused, Manoj Vasant Hiwarkar (38) is a resident of Plot No. 154-155, Kale Layout, Zingabai Takli. A resident of Shivaji Nagar, Dharampeth, Dr Ghike (64) in his complaint stated that some of his machines at his diagnostic centre were not functioning properly and he decided to replace them. As there was a delay in getting the loan sanctioned from the bank, he borrowed Rs 30 lakh from Hiwarkar to purchase new machines on September 1, 2021.
As per the commitment, he was paying 10 percent monthly interest on the amount borrowed from Hiwarkar who had already taken three signed blank cheques as security deposit from him. Hiwarkar had also taken a signed blank stamp paper from him. Though he repaid the entire amount of Rs 77 lakh to Hiwarkar, the latter came along with two of his accomplices to his diagnostic centre on May 10 and demanded Rs 2.40 crore from him. When he told Hiwarkar that he had already returned the entire amount with interest to him, the latter threatened to kill him and his family if failed to give him Rs 2.40 crore.
Following Dr Ghike’s complaint in May this year, police had registered a case under Sections 384, 385, 386, 387, 506(2) of the IPC against Hiwarkar. Further investigations are underway.
