Nagpur: The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has started its pre-monsoon checkups to avoid any inconvenience to the consumers. The process is already delayed due to unseasonal rains that resulted in widespread destruction of power assets necessitating attending these emergency repairs first.
Various repair works will be carried out at various places to ensure that consumers do not face power-cuts. The checks will be carried out in Nagpur and Wardha districts and alongside many other works are going on at a fast pace, including the cutting of tree branches that are obstructing power lines. Employees of MSEDCL are engaged in maintenance and repair work under the fierce sun. The month of May sees temperature reaching up to 45 degrees Celsius in the entire Vidarbha including Nagpur and many times unseasonal rains with occasional lightning strikes also occur during this period.
Since most of the assets of MSEDCL power distribution system are in open places they are susceptible to climate change and it has an adverse effect on the power distribution system that in turn affects consumers and customer services. At many places, tree branches are dangling close to power wires. Such tree branches will be chopped to avoid damage to the electrical system. Similarly, to avoid the damage, all concerned in Nagpur and Wardha districts have been instructed to check the system in their respective areas and cut these tree branches as per need with the help of the concerned local government body.
Also the loose items like kites, manja, flags, poles, flex banners, plastic flags stuck in the power lines also affect the system, due to which the power supply gets interrupted. Instructions have also been given to remove moths, manja, pieces of clothes or anything similar stuck in the power lines and wires in time. Maintaining proper level of oil in heaters in power substation and replacing silica gel in breather if it has deteriorated are also undertaken during the checks.
Earthing is more important in the power distribution system, for this strengthening the earthing of the heaters, the earthing of poles, distribution boxes, feeder pillars, mini feeder pillars are also being started on a large scale.
