Mukhtar Ansari, a notorious gangster and mafia don who was serving time in prison, passed away on Thursday. The 57-year-old was admitted to Banda Medical College earlier in the day after being found unconscious in his cell. Authorities swiftly responded, rushing him to the district hospital for treatment.
Ansari’s demise comes amidst a backdrop of legal troubles. On March 13, he was handed a life sentence for his involvement in an arms license scam dating back to 1990, where he allegedly used forged documents. This marked the eighth instance in the past two years where courts in Uttar Pradesh found him guilty and sentenced him.
Furthermore, in December 2023, Ansari faced additional legal woes when the MP/MLA Court in Varanasi convicted him for intimidating a crucial witness in the murder case of Nand Kishor Rungta, a 26-year-old coal merchant. As a result, he was sentenced to five and a half years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 10,000.
Ansari’s death brings to an end a chapter in the saga of Uttar Pradesh’s criminal underworld, where his name loomed large for decades. Despite his demise, his legacy as a powerful figure in the state’s criminal landscape remains a topic of interest and concern.
