Multi-crore MACT scam: Nagpur EOW arrests one more accused

Nagpur: After putting all main accused behind bars in the infamous fraud worth crores of rupees involving Digambar Bholanath Dere, a clerk working with Motor Accident Claim Tribunal (MACT) and others, Economic Offences Wing (EOW ) of Nagpur Police arrested one more person in this connection.

A team of EOW picked up Dere’s brother Duryodhan, from his residence at Asola (Khurd), taluka Manora, district Washim. Cops produced Duryodhan before the court here and obtained remand for his custodial interrogation till June 1. Duryodhan was arrested in a case registered at Sadar Police Station under Sections 420, 409, 418,467,468,471,477 (a), 381,411, 413,201, 120(B) of the Indian Penal Code.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (EOW ) Archit Chandak who is supervising the probe said that the scam is of about Rs 40 crore and as many as 11 FIRs have been registered so far against the accused persons. Prime accused Digambar Dere had allegedly siphoned off crores of rupees from the amount paid as compensation by insurance companies to accident victims.

In connivance with other accused, Digambar allegedly diverted the amount to the accounts of his wife Rajshree Dere, Kiran Anchalwar, Sachin Gandhare, Pitambar Maniram Dharkar, Adesh Pitambar Dharkar, Om Datta Jare, Ujwala Bhimrao Bhagat, Reena Harish Bhagat, Gopal Datta Jare, Bhimrao Narayan Bhagat, directors of Hardik Shubheccha Cotton Pvt Ltd, Ganga Transport, Apex Trading and Haru and Dharu Construction and Duryodhan Dere.

In the instant case registered at Sadar Police Station, prime accused Digambar Dere in connivance with other accused had siphoned off more than Rs 4.31crore from the amount paid as compensation by insurance companies to accident victims between 2020 and 2021.

Duryodhan Dere was arrested by API Santosh Mudhe and his team comprising constabulary staff Gyaneshwar Jadhav, Chandrashekhar Ghagre, Ashish Laxane and Ashwini Manwatkar.
