Nagpur: For several years, the Municipal Corporation has been striving to rank high in the cleanliness survey, but despite their efforts, they haven’t been able to secure a top position. In response, the corporation’s officials have allegedly resorted to manipulating the survey by staging fake demonstrations.

On Saturday, August 10, a setup was arranged in HB Town Garden, using 10 drums to show a fake composting process. After the survey team from Indore conducted their inspection, attempts were made to remove the setup, but local residents have started protesting against the corporation’s actions.

Officials claim that compost, which usually takes 45 days to prepare, was surprisingly ready within a week. However, residents are opposing the removal of the drums, accusing the officials of dishonesty. They allege that the corporation is threatening to stop garbage collection and file police complaints if they don’t allow the removal.

The Issue: Under the Swachh Bharat Mission for the 2024-25 cleanliness survey, areas generating over 100 kg of wet waste daily were to be surveyed. This included residential welfare colonies, housing societies, and large hotels, focusing on their waste management processes. For this survey, 10 drums were placed in HB Town Garden on August 9 to demonstrate composting with different types of wet waste. After the survey, the corporation tried to remove the drums, but local residents are refusing to let them go.

Removing the Compost Drums:The HB Town colony had not placed any drums for composting. The drums were brought in by the Municipal Corporation’s Lakadganj Zone on August 10 to show compost production. The officials are now trying to remove the drums after claiming that compost was made within a week. The residents’ opposition is baseless, and all allegations are unfounded, according to Pramod Atram, Zonal Officer of Lakadganj Zone.

Fraud in the Name of Cleanliness Survey:Local resident Mithilesh Chaudhary accused the Municipal Corporation of fraud. He claimed that the drums, brought in under the guise of composting for the survey, are now being removed just a week later without producing any compost. The corporation is allegedly threatening to stop garbage collection and file police complaints if residents continue to oppose the removal.
