Nagpur: Cracking a whip on nylon manja sellers, the Nagpur police raided many places, seized huge stock of nylon manja and arrested a total of 8 persons in this connection.
The Crime Branch Unit -II of Nagpur Police arrested three persons and seized 159 spools of banned nylon Manja valued at Rs 1.11 lakh from their possession. The accused have been identified as Sitanshu Mohan Mahanto (20), a resident of Ward No 4, Adarsh Nagar, Koradi, Taywade College Road, Raj Jeevan Bhongade (20), a resident of Matakhedi, Ward No 14, Saoner and Saurabh Purshottam Katkar (21), a resident of Ward No 1, Telipura, Kelvad.
Acting on a tip off, a team of Unit-II raided accused Mahanto’s house and found chakris of nylon Manja. During questioning, he told the police that he had procured the manja chakris from Bhongade and Katkar. Subsequently, police raided their places and seized a total of 159 chakris of Manja worth Rs 1.11 lakh.
A case under Sections 188 of the Indian Penal Code, read with Sections 5, 15 of the Environment (Protection) Act was registered against the accused trio at Koradi Police Station.
The arrests were made by Senior PI Rahul Shire,API Tushal Kalele, API Ganesh Pawar and others under the supervision of CP Amitesh Kumar, Joint CP Aswati Dorje, Additional CP Neeva Jain, DCP (Detection) Mummaka Sudarshan and ACP (Crime) Roshan Pandit.
Meanwhile, Tehsil and Shanti Nagar police teams conducted separate raids at two places in the city and seized collectively 658 nylon manja reels and arrested five persons. The Tehsil police seized 120 reels of nylon manja and arrested three persons from Gandhibagh market.
The accused have been identified as Rakesh Punitram Sonboir (25), a resident of Plot No. 9, Bajrang Chowk, Bhavani Nagar, Pardi; Neeraj Kishore Baralia (25), a resident of Balaji Nagar and Gaurav Balkrishna Kumbhre (23), a resident of Marar Toli. Acting on a tip-off, the police team raided the shop of the accused in Sut Market area and seized the nylon manja worth Rs 72,000. The cops also seized an Activa moped (MH49/AD-2433) from the accused. A case under Section Sections 5, 14 of The Environment (Protection) Act read with Section 188 of Indian Penal Code was registered against the accused.
Shanti Nagar police seized 658 manja reels collectively worth Rs 2.18 lakh from a Mini Truck and arrested two persons in this connection. The accused have been identified as Habib Sheikh Rafique Sheikh (20), a resident of Itwari and Rajesh Prabhu Dhurwe (30), a resident of Bhaldarpura. The Mini truck was also seized by the police. Truck driver Kalyani and his accomplice Sonu are absconding, police said.
