Nagpur: Addiction to cell phone led to a minor girl committing suicide in Hudkeshwar police area in Nagpur on Monday. The girl was the daughter of Police Head Constable.
The deceased, 15- year-old Purna Nilesh Dhone, a Standard X student at Somalwar School, Ramdaspeth, was found dead by suicide at her home. Purna, the daughter of Head Constable Nilesh Dhone, who is attached to Unit-IV of the Crime Branch, reportedly took her life by hanging herself from a ceiling hook using a ‘dupatta’ in her house at Plot No 102, Mahalaxmi Nagar-2, Hudkeshwar, around 4:18 am.
Reports indicate that Purna had been struggling with an addiction to her smart phone, which had become a source of concern for her parents. Allegedly, they had recently scolded her for spending excessive time on her phone instead of focusing on her studies. The parents, fearing that her screen addiction could negatively impact her mental health, potentially leading to anxiety and depression, had decided to consult a psychiatrist. Purna, too, had reportedly agreed to seek help. However, before the scheduled consultation, Purna tragically decided to take her own life.
The staff from Hudkeshwar Police Station, led by Senior Inspector Gyaneshwar Bhedodkar, arrived at the scene and sent her body to the Government Medical College & Hospital for an autopsy. An accidental death case has been registered, and the police have initiated further investigations into the matter.
The incident has raised concerns about the mental health challenges faced by teenagers in the digital age, as well as the critical role of parental support and intervention.
