Nagpur: The Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) of the Nagpur Police successfully tracked down a 17-year-old girl who had gone missing from her home on September 25, after eloping with a local auto driver. The girl, who later married the driver after turning 18, had left home without informing her family, prompting a frantic search and a police investigation.
The girl, originally from a troubled home, had moved to Nagpur with her mother some years ago to escape her alcoholic father, who frequently harassed her mother. They lived in a rented house near the home of the girl’s maternal uncle. On the day of her disappearance, her mother and relatives began searching for her but were unable to locate her. Eventually, they reported the case to the MIDC Police Station, where a kidnapping case was registered, and the AHTU launched an investigation.
During the investigation, police discovered that the girl had developed a relationship with Imran, a 24-year-old auto driver, over the past two years. The teenager had been commuting to school in his auto, and their friendship blossomed into a romantic relationship. Police revealed that the couple had been planning to elope just days before the girl’s 18th birthday. After fleeing their homes, the pair stayed in Gondia at the house of Imran’s maternal grandmother, and when the girl turned 18, they married at a local temple.
The police tracked the girl to Gondia and were preparing to send a team to retrieve her when they discovered she had returned to Nagpur and was living with Imran. Both were taken into custody and handed over to MIDC Police for further investigation.
The case highlights the diligent efforts of Nagpur’s Anti-Human Trafficking Unit in locating the missing girl and ensuring her safe return, bringing relief to her worried family.
