Nagpur: Amitesh Kumar, an IPS officer of 1995 batch, who took the reigns as Nagpur Police Commissioner in September 2020, reportedly got extension to continue in the post for one more year. With this extension, the most successful and one of the youngest police officers, is set to become the longest serving Commissioner of Police in Nagpur.

Kumar was one of the three DCPs in city in 2006 who had to fight the Khairlanji protesters on road when the region was simmering in tension.

According to a report, the extension has been given in view of the forthcoming Corporation elections. As per norms, an officer cannot be transferred before completion of two-year tenure at one place, but extension may be granted as per the discretion of the government based on its administrative decision.

Kumar would be completing three years in Nagpur in September this year, which would make him one of the longest serving CPs in Nagpur. Against the backdrop of the sensitivity of Nagpur as crime-prone city and intelligence reports of a high volatility in the political rivalry to wrench maximum seats in the civic body for preparing ground for a state assembly election at any time, it’s learnt the home department and state police top brass have decided not to shift the CP, who already has developed a ‘feel’ of the city and cultivated own intelligence network.
