Nagpur: In Nagpur, a concerning trend has emerged as some content creators resort to offensive language and questionable humour to gain attention on social media platforms. Recognizing the negative impact of such content, the Cyber Police Station has initiated strict measures to hold creators accountable.

Speaking to Nagpur Today, Archit Chandak, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Economic Offences Wing (EOW) and Cyber, highlighted the department’s firm stance against immoral content. Approximately 15 cases have been addressed, primarily involving youth aged between 16 and 24 years. Offenders were summoned to the police station and required to delete their offensive posts under the initiative.

The initiative arose due to a significant increase in negative content and numerous complaints received through various channels. DCP Chandak explained that the police employ a combination of online patrolling, citizen reports, and collaboration with local influencers to identify violators of community guidelines.

Creators are counselled on the zero-tolerance policy for offensive content. The police maintain diary entries and records of counselling sessions. DCP Chandak emphasized that public apologies by content creators serve as a deterrent and a means to discourage similar behaviour.

Acknowledging the societal background’s role, DCP Chandak noted that some young individuals may lack an understanding of right and wrong due to weak educational or social backgrounds. The department faces challenges in tracking content creators and identifying those operating behind fake accounts.

The Cyber Police actively engage in public talks at schools and colleges, educating students about cybercrime, online harassment, and abuse. They encourage students to become ‘cyber volunteers’ by assisting family members less familiar with online threats and safety measures.

DCP Chandak highlighted positive responses from citizens, expressing appreciation for actions taken against offensive content. The initiative aims to counsel rather than register offenses against young individuals prone to mistakes during their formative years.

As Nagpur Cyber Police actively addresses the surge in negative content, their approach combines enforcement with education, seeking to create a safer and more responsible online environment.
