Nagpur: Over 2500 couples file for divorce in the Family Court, Nagpur every year. This was revealed through an RTI query filed by activist Abhay Kolarkar.
According to the data shared, a total of 2624 cases were filed in calendar year 2021; 2783 cases were filed in the year 2022; and 1009 cases were filed for divorce till May 2023. The data also revealed that over 4000 cases are carried forward every year due to non-dispency.

In the year 2021,the pending cases stood at 4710 cases; in 2022 the pending cases stood at 4520; and 4520 cases were pending till May 2023. In an interesting revelation, 595 cases in the family court are more than 5 years old and 10 cases are more than 10 years old. An average of 900 couples applied for mutual divorce every year. In the year 2022, 909 couples filed for mutual divorce.
The figures for the year 2022 stood at 443 cases till May 2023. Decision of 514 couples that filed for mutual divorce, awaited the court’s decision as of May 2023. Equivalent of cases that filed for divorce, also sought alimony.
In the year 2022, a total of 2044 claims were made for alimony. The claims for possession of children saw a staggering number, with 4362 cases in the year 2022; and 1960 cases till May 2023. The cases pending for child custody till May 2023 stood at the highest of all figures at 8537.
