Nagpur experienced heavy rainfall on Saturday, exposing the inadequacies of the municipal corporation’s planning and claims. Water entered numerous homes, raising questions about the city’s development and administrative measures. On the birthday of Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister and Nagpur’s Guardian Minister Devendra Fadnavis, a citizen sent him a letter expressing these concerns and criticizing municipal officials. The letter, which has gone viral on social media, urged Fadnavis to ensure timely execution of civic works.

Previously, rains did not flood homes; only areas near the Nag and Pili rivers, slums, and low-lying regions were affected. However, in recent years, even moderate rains have inundated the entire city. The letter blames rising road levels, construction over rivers and streams, insufficient cleaning by the municipal corporation, and inadequate drainage systems.

Last September’s heavy rains caused significant damage in West Nagpur, flooding homes and causing losses worth millions. This area, known for its development and large BJP voter base, experienced flooding for the first time in 50 years. Following public outrage, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis held urgent meetings and approved a multi-crore planning scheme. New bridges were constructed, and obstructions in rivers and streams were cleared. The municipal corporation also started pre-monsoon work earlier than usual, beginning in winter. However, Saturday’s rainfall showed that these measures were insufficient, severely affecting South and East Nagpur.
