Nagpur: The doctors in Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) have not only treated a 19-year old girl for Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS), a rare disease; but also extended financial assistance to her parents for the treatment.
The girl recovered from this rare disease and regained her confidence and has expressed that she wants to excel in the Civil Services Examination. The girl named Divya Giri had developed difficulty in moving her body in December 2022. She was not able to lift her neck as well. She got some initial treatment at an Akola hospital where she was admitted for 17 days. She was put on a ventilator. Her parents lost almost Rs 10-15 lakh in those 17 days. Their financial condition is so poor that they had to sell their land, house to gather money for the treatment.
Finally, the family brought her to GMCH from Akola on January 15. Divya was kept in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Ward Number 52. Dr Milind Vyawahare, the Unit in-charge said, “The disease is rare and one in 2-3 lakh people suffer from it. When a person suffers from this disease, the hands and legs of the person get paralysed. It also affects the respiratory system due to which the patient is put on a ventilator.
The medicine was very costly so her case was managed under Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jana Aarogya Yojna (MPJAY ). Doctors too contributed financially to ease the load on Divya’s parents. Dr Raj Gajbhiye, Dean, GMCH expressed satisfaction over the development. He said, “I congratulate the team of medicos who put in a lot of effort. It will send a message outside that such kinds of rare diseases are treated successfully in Government hospitals too.
Dr Milind Vyavahare, Dr Praveen Shingade, Dr Harish Sapkal, Dr Radha Dhoke, Dr Rhea Sabu, Dr Sajal Bansal, Dr Pooja Borlepwar, Dr Sumit Mangle, Dr Vishal Bokde, Dr Jyotsna and all other staff played an important role.
