Nagpur man murders wife for not conceiving, tries to mislead cops

Nagpur: Kalamna Police of Nagpur arrested a 43-year-old man, Babulal Jeevan Verma, on charges of murdering his wife, Sabira, for being unable to become a mother and also suspected her of having an illicit relationship. After murdering his wife Sabira, Babulal covered her body with a cloth, placed coins on her forehead and sat beside the body for six hours. The tragic incident occurred at Plot No 38, Ram Bhoomi Society, Vijay Nagar, on Tuesday night.

According to the police, Babulal had a history of torturing his 40-year-old wife Sabira due to her inability to conceive. On the night of the incident, a heated argument erupted between the couple during which Babulal lost his temper. In a fit of rage, he picked up a bamboo stick and struck Sabira on the head, killing her instantly. After committing the crime, Babulal attempted to mislead the cops by making it appear as if Sabira had died of natural causes. Babulal covered her body with a piece of cloth hoping to conceal the evidence.

Senior Police Inspector Prashant Pande received a tip-off from a beat marshal that a woman had been murdered near Durga Chowk, Vijay Nagar. The police quickly responded and arrived at the scene. Upon reaching the residence of the Vermas, they found the door latched from the inside. After persistent knocking, the door was opened by Thansingh alias Rupesh Shankar Verma, Babulal’s nephew who revealed that his uncle had killed his aunt.

Inside the house, police found Sabira’s lifeless body covered with a cloth. Babulal, who was in another room, was immediately taken into custody. The bamboo stick used in the murder was also seized by the police. After the inquest ‘panchnama,’ Sabira’s body was sent to Government Medical College & Hospital for post-mortem.

A formal complaint was lodged by Thansingh leading to Babulal’s arrest under Section 103(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police investigation is underway to uncover more details surrounding the murder case.
